Anxiety alerts us to danger. We need it to survive. However, in the modern world we do not need it quite as much as our brains may lead us to believe. Many of us have past experiences and hold core beliefs that skew our perceptions about what is threatening or dangerous and we experience anxiety a significant amount of the time.
Usually, we become so accustomed to operating on low level anxiety that we are not fully aware of the effect that it has on us. We may ignore the symptoms or look for quick fixes to deal with the effects on:
Our physical bodies…
-
Shallow breathing
-
Tense muscles
-
Headaches
-
Stomachaches
-
Elevated blood pressure
-
Loss of libido
-
Difficulty sleeping
Our work….
-
Difficulty concentrating
-
Feeling overwhelmed
-
Forgetfulness
-
Procrastination
Our relationships…
-
Feeling irritable or quick to argue
-
Avoiding conversations
-
Avoiding social events
-
Obsessive thoughts
-
Feeling of dread
Overtime, the build-up of fear and symptoms of anxiety become overwhelming. Significant stressful events may tip us over the edge and make us feel like we are not able to cope. Working with a therapist can help.
Using Mindfulness techniques and Internal Family Systems, I work with people to help them have compassion towards their anxiety. I also use Cognitive Behavioral techniques to help uncover unrealistic thought patterns that may contribute to their challenges with anxiety and those that often overlap with anxiety, including perfectionism, low self-esteem and depression. With time, clients often discover greater sense of mastery and calm than they did prior to therapy.
I earned my Masters in Counseling from Pacific University. I have five years of clinical experience and I specialize in treating anxiety. In my free time I enjoy yoga, walking my dog, listening to stand-up comedy, and time with friends and family.
